Don’t be Denied Boarding on your Cruise!

It happens all the time. Travelers are excited to get started on their relaxing cruise vacation, they arrive at the cruise terminal and they are denied boarding because they didn’t read the fine print before their departure. Maybe they are missing the proper documentation or didn’t even realize that they were in violation of one of the cruise line’s or even a port of call’s rules.

One way to avoid problems all together is to read through the cruise documentation that you are sent with your cruise confirmation. The terms & conditions always spell things out pretty clearly. If you still have any questions or concerns, contact your travel agent or the cruise line directly.

Top Reasons Travelers are Denied Boarding

In the Caribbean and Bermuda:

  • U.S. citizens with only a driver’s license
  • U.S. citizens with an expired passport (must be valid for 6 months after the end of your cruise)
  • Women more than 24 weeks pregnant
  • U.S. citizens without an alien resident card (ARC) or with an expired card
  • Foreign nationals without an I-20 form (applicable to J, F and K visa holders only)

In Alaska:

  • U.S. citizens with only a driver’s license
  • U.S. citizens with an expired passport (must be valid for 6 months after the end of your cruise)
  • Passengers with a recorded crime, including a DUI or DWI.
  • U.S. citizens without an alien resident card (ARC) or with an expired card
  • Foreign nationals without a Canadian visa

Canada has very strict laws about criminals crossing the boarders or coming into one of their ports. You can actually be denied boarding if you have a previous crime that they consider a felony. If you have any sort of criminal record & are considering a cruise to Alaska, that might stop in Canada (and most do), please do your due diligence prior to arriving at your departure port.

If you are a U.S. citizen and you qualify to cruise without a passport, make sure you are traveling with your driver’s license and an original, state-issued birth certificate for each passenger.

Although it doesn’t affect boarding, I also highly recommend travel protection insurance for every vacation that you take. The policies can cover a wide range of things from trip cancellation and trip interruption to medical emergencies and lost luggage.

Possible New Port in the Bahamas for Disney Cruise Line

There have been rumors that Disney is working on a new private beach in the Bahamas.  We all can’t help but think about their three new ships scheduled to hit the high seas in 2021, 2022 & 2023.  Will the new ships visit the new private beach or sail to Castaway Cay?  Will the project even be done by 2021?  I personally think that they may need a little more time, but it is likely that we will see a new private beach area by the time the third ship sails in 2023.
The Los Angeles Times has recently released some new news surrounding this project.

Officials in the Bahamas have issued tentative approval for Disney Cruise Line’s plan to construct and operate a cruise port on the island of Eleuthera.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the project would be built on a 746-acre piece of land the company already agreed to purchase. The plans call for the building of “a pier, shops, marina, restaurants and walkways through nearby forests and around salt ponds.”

Travel Pulse has stated that although the project would create jobs, it has met with some resistance from from the locals who had a rival plan to develop the southern tip of the island into a park that features a small condo/hotel project, canoe rentals, a dive center and horseback tours.

Although The Bahamas has possibly issued preliminary approval for the project on Friday, the island Chain’s Parliament will still need to agree to a specific set of terms & conditions as well as the proper safety and environmental testing.

Everyone who has been on a Disney Cruise and has stopped in Castaway Cay, can understand why this private island paradise in the Bahamas is so popular.  With three new ships set to sail in the coming years, Disney’s private island experience will definitely be due for an expansion.

Disney Cruise Line to Sail from New Orleans and visit Hawaii in 2020

In early 2020, Disney Cruise Line will offer families even more ways to explore the world together with the addition of a brand-new home port in New Orleans, Louisiana and a highly anticipated return to the Hawaiian Islands. Disney Cruise Line will also return to Puerto Rico for a limited time and continue guest-favorite itineraries to tropical destinations from Florida and California.

Who doesn’t want to take a Disney Cruise to Hawaii?  After a five year hiatus, Disney Cruise Line will be visiting Hawaii again on 2 special cruises in early February 2020; nine-night voyage to Honolulu from Vancouver, Canada, on April 29, and a 10-night sailing back to Vancouver on May 8.  During these dream vacations, guests will discover the breathtaking beauty of the Hawaiian Islands, including the famous beaches of Waikiki on Oahu; the views from high atop the summit of Haleakala Crater on Maui; the lush tropical gardens and waterfalls of Kauai; and the diverse natural wonders of Hawaii Island.

For the very first time ever, the Disney Wonder will be sailing 6 sailings from New Orleans for a limited time during 2020.  Just the thought of a little bit of food & jazz music for a few nights before my cruise makes me want to jump onboard right now.  Before or after your Disney cruise, you can venture into the city to savor the distinct flavors of famous New Orleans cuisine, visit family-friendly museums and parks, and revel in the sweet melodies of world-renowned jazz music. Travelers will delight in the Southern charm of this new home port, and Disney fans will find magic around every corner as they experience the iconic sights and sounds that inspired the beloved animated film “The Princess and the Frog.”
The Disney Wonder will embark on six cruises during this limited-time season from New Orleans, including four-, six- and seven-night Western Caribbean sailings; a seven-night Bahamian cruise; and a 14-night Panama Canal voyage, departing February 7 through March 6.

The Disney Wonder will also continue to offer the popular itineraries from Puerto Rico before moving to California to continue the Mexico & Baja cruises from San Diego.

The Disney Magic, Disney Dream & Disney Fantasy will all sail out of Port Canaveral and include stops at Disney’s private island Castaway Cay.
